The desire to create a solution that could meet the specific needs of a Sexual Assault Forensic Nurse Examiner or SAFE began early in 2001.  Extensive time was spent at SART centers in an effort to see and understand the requirements of the “Sexual Assault Response Team”.

 A workflow “blueprint” was created during that time allowing for a clear understanding of both the actual internal workflow process and the overall business needs.  Interestingly enough, a "copy" of the results of each sexual assault exam is passed on to other agencies that thrive outside the SART internal business model. Furthermore, there are multiple external agencies that are required to handle the results, each with different roles and responsibilities. Some even have proprietary technologies in place making communications difficult.

To complicate the matter, any solution that might be offered to the forensic community would have to survive a Kelly-Frye hearing, The Daubert Test of Reliability, be 100% HIPAA compliant, meet and/or exceed state and federal security standards, be non-proprietary in nature and be designed to move huge amounts of digital data, up to 2GB, across existing Internet lines, securely, in a very simple and easy way.

Thus, after an extensive amount of time, effort and research SDFI^®-TeleMedicine was designed and conceived to serve the forensic legal community.

SDFI^®-TeleMedicine is now being used at multiple hospital locations and Independent Forensic Service locations and is supported by the Los Angeles District Attorney's office, the San Diego District Attorney’s Office, the L.A.P.D., Glendale P.D. and Alhambra P.D. and others in Southern California.

There are SDFI-TeleMedicine Systems in California, Colorado, Texas, Indiana and Hawaii among others.
